Usk Hotels

Usk Hotels are places to go to if you are on holiday in South Wales. Usk is a lovely little town in South East Wales which has a bridge into it,. It is on the road to Caerleon and Newport, and on other roads. It has the same name as the River Usk, indeed you may be looking for hotels along the river Usk not just the town Usk, where you may be able to see Tintern Abbey. Usk (Welsh: Brynbuga) is a small picturesque town in Monmouthshire, Wales, situated 10 miles northeast of Newport. Usk is noted for its rural setting, tranquil lifestyle and quality of life. It feels more like a village than a town. The River Usk flows through the town and is spanned by an ancient, arched stone bridge at the western entrance to the town. A castle above the town overlooks the ancient Anglo-Welsh border crossing - the river can usually be crossed on foot in summer even today. Usk won the Large Village award in the 2005 Britain in Bloom awards. The current population is less than 2,500 and the town is known for its abundant supply of pubs and restaurants and antique shops. Many people will make the drive from Newport and even further afield for a quiet meal away from the bustle of the city. The main street, which is the A472 road, is a narrow collection of old houses, restaurants, pubs, shops and businesses (some premises dating back to the 15th century), and it passes a large and tranquil town square. When driving through South Wales oncem, we went and hhad some Sunday Dinner in a Usk hotel, with a beutiful waitress serving us. The River Usk (Welsh: Afon Wysg) rises in the Carmarthen Fans mountains or Fan Brycheiniog of mid-Wales, in the westernmost part of the Brecon Beacons National Park then flows south-east through Brecon , Crickhowell, Abergavenny and the eponymous town of Usk past the Roman legionary fortress of Caerleon, through the heart of Newport city and into the Severn estuary at Uskmouth beyond Newport.

Hotels in Caerleon

Caerleon is a place in South Wales, it is now a small town, though to city slickers a village on the outskirts of Newport. There are hotels in Caerleon, and some people stay in them, perhaps when meeting family or friends, or perhaps when on a holiday in South Wales. Caerleon is famous for having a Roman history, and some may visit here, perhaps all the way from America to see the amphetheatre, and the rem, ains of Roman fortitifications. Some may say how some though King Arthur's round table was here, and some though Camelot weas here. There are hotels, and restraunts and shops in Caerleon, plus when I was there last a bank and cash machine, some may stay in the college in the off season, and some may stay in other places maybe canps sites, or a inn or a pals house. Caerleon has the ability for you to walk to Newport, though be careful as the opaths are not that safe and well lit, I did that when in Caerleon. Caerleon (Welsh: Caerllion) is a suburban village and community, situated on the River Usk in the northern outskirts of the city of Newport, South Wales. It is a site of archaeological importance, being the site of a notable Roman legionary fortress and an Iron Age hill fort. It also has strong literary associations as Geoffrey of Monmouth makes Caerleon one of the most important cities in Britain in his Historia Regum Britanniæ, and Alfred Lord Tennyson wrote Idylls of the King while staying in Caerleon. The community has a large number of pubs for its size, including The Bell Inn, The Olde Bull, The Ship Inn, The Red Lion, The Goldcroft, The Minstrels Sporting Bar, The White Hart, and just outside Caerleon, The St Julians Inn. The list of pubs also includes the Hanbury Arms and the Drovers Arms. The Hanbury Arms is located on Castle Street, at the side of the River Usk, near the field in which the annual Arts Festival takes place. In 1856 the poet Tennyson lodged at the inn while he wrote his "Morte D'Arthur" (later incorporated into his "Idylls of the King". The name of the Drovers Arms, located on Goldcroft Common, bears witness to the ancient drovers route on the old road from Malpas. It is thought that the common itself was once the site of a cattle market. The Caerleon ward is home to the Celtic Manor Resort, location of the 2010 Ryder Cup Caerleon also has a good quality 9-hole municipal golf course and driving range, however, during winter months the golf course is prone to flooding due to its situation next to the River Usk. There are small hotels in Caerleon, people have stayed in inns and hotels here for centuries, some maybe doing drawings in the 18th Century of bridges and places here, and trees. Also some may stay in the Celtic Manor, the home of the exiting prospect of the Ryder Cup. The Celtic Manor Resort is a golf-centric hotel and leisure resort in the city of Newport, South Wales, United Kingdom. The Resort is owned by Welsh billionaire Sir Terry Matthews and the CEO is Matthews' son Dylan Matthews. It will be the venue for the Ryder Cup Matches in the year 2010, marking the first time the Cup will be played in Wales. The Matches will be played on the Resort's new "Twenty Ten" course; the first golf course specifically designed to host the biennial event. Matthews bought the Manor House in 1980, ploughing £100m into a redevelopment and refurbishment project. The house was renovated and converted but retaining all its best older features. Initially with 16 bedrooms, the Celtic Manor hotel opened in 1982. With the eventual addition of a three-storey modern extension, by the early 1990s the hotel's capacity was expanded to 70 bedrooms. The hotel won Egon Ronay awards for the best hotel in Wales for five consecutive years.

houses for rent in newport wales

When I was in South Wales I was renting a room in a house in Newport Wales. It was a house near Somerset Road, and Caerleon Road. Not those actual streets though. and we were students. I paid a certain amount a month abnd had my own room. If I chose to rent a whole house, I wouldlike it to be on the outskirts alone, detached with a garden far away from other houses. Newport has many houses, when I was there I could overlook Newport, and see the lights of the city, being from a small town, this was like LA or New York to me, nobody else though that. I cleaned it when we leftm, cl;eaning up the fridge and stuff. Newport (Welsh: Casnewydd) is a city and principal area in Wales, in the United Kingdom. Standing on the banks of the River Usk, located roughly between Cardiff and Bristol, it is the cultural capital and largest urban area in the historic county of Monmouthshire and is governed by the unitary Newport City Council. The population of Newport is 140,100, making it the third most populous city in Wales. According to Census 2001 data the population of the core built-up area was 116,143.

The name 'Newport' derives from the fact that Caerleon was the 'old port' on the river Usk, but as ships became bigger, they could no longer navigate the river to Caerleon so a new port/dock was built near where the Riverfront Arts Centre stands today. The Welsh language name for the city, Casnewydd-ar-Wysg (IPA: [kas?n?w?ð ar ?w?sk]) means 'New castle-on-Usk' (this is a shortened version of Castell Newydd ar Wysg). This refers to the twelfth-century castle ruins near the city centre. The original Newport Castle was a small Motte-and-bailey castle in the park opposite St. Woolos Cathedral. It was buried in rubble excavated from the railway tunnels that were dug under Stow Hill in the 1840s and no part of it is currently visible. Newport also has the Latin name Novus Burgus, meaning new borough or new town. It is sometimes labelled Newport-on-Usk on old maps The city is largely low-lying, but with a few hilly areas. Areas in the south and east of the city tend to be flat and fertile with some housing estates and industrial areas reclaimed from marshland. Areas such as Caerleon, near the banks of the River Usk are also low-lying. The eastern outskirts of the city are characterised by the gently rolling hills of the Vale of Usk. There is a ridge of higher land known as Ridgeway running through the city with good views of surrounding areas.

The suburbs of the city have grown outwards from the inner-city, mainly near the main roads, giving the suburban sprawl of the city an irregular shape. Several out-of-town shopping centres have been built to cater for the needs of these suburbs. Such centres have large free car parks and are seen as more convenient than travelling several miles to shop in the city centre. The urban area is continuing to expand rapidly with new housing estates continuing to be built. You want to rent a house in Ricsa, or the town centre on Stow Hill, I remember going to a party a Halloween party and it was on a hill at noght so seemed spookier. There are many shops, including book shops in Newport. Many students rented but so do many othersd, workers, eldrly people, and many others.

Monmouth Houses

Monmouth is a place in South Wales famous as the place associated with Monmouthshire. It is a town with many houses, some houses are new, and some are old, some have shops below. I helped in excavating a Monmouth house, for a afternoon, a bank, I did little there. It was on the main street. We also bought some chips from a house a fish and chip shop there, maybe the owners lived above it. Monmouth (Welsh: Trefynwy = "town on the Monnow") is a town in southeast Wales and traditional county town of the historic county of Monmouthshire. It is situated where the River Monnow meets the River Wye with bridges over both. Monmouth boasts a medieval 13th-century stone gated bridge at Monnow Bridge, unique in Britain as it is the only preserved bridge of its design remaining. There is also a long bridge over the River Wye. After centuries of waiting a second bridge over the Monnow was finally opened on March 15, 2004, thus allowing the old bridge to become pedestrianised. This project has, however, meant the demolition of the old cattle market, thus Monmouth is no longer the traditional market town it has traditionally been; however, a farmers' market selling local produce is still held. Archaeological excavations undertaken by the Monmouth Archaeological Society on various sites along Monnow Street have uncovered a wealth of information about the early history of the town. Indeed, the Council for British Archaeology have designated Monmouth as one of the top ten towns in Britain for archaeology The Savoy Theatre in Church Street, built on the site of the oldest theatre in Wales functions as both a cinema and theatre. There are numerous pubs in the centre of Monmouth, including Old Nags Head, Queen's Head, Punch House, The Griffin, The Gloucester, The Vinetree, The Kings Head, The Three Horseshoes, The Green Dragon and The Gatehouse. Some of these hold pub quizzes and live music throughout the week.Monmouth is twinned with Carbonne, France and Waldbronn, Germany. The castle came into the possession of the House of Lancaster through the marriage of John of Gaunt to Blanche, a Monmouth based heiress. John of Gaunt strengthened the castle, adding the Great Hall.

In 1387, Henry V was born in Monmouth Castle in the Queens Chamber within the gatehouse. The castle became a favourite residence of the House of Lancaster. Henry would win the Battle of Agincourt in 1415. Many parts of Monmouth, including the town's main square, are named after this battle.

During the rebellion of Owain Glyndwr between 1400 and 1412 Monmouth Castle and walled town was not attacked by Welsh forces, however skirmishes and battles were fought in the area, such as at Campston Hill when Prince Henry's men followed a retreating force of Glyndwr's, capturing the Welsh standard and killing the standard bearer, Ellis ap Richard ap Howell ap Morgan Llwyd. Other battles took place at nearby at Craig-y-Dorth, at Grosmont and Usk, such as the Battle of Pwll Melyn. Grosmont town was razed and Abergavenny and Crickhowell attacked. Robert Plant of Led Zeppelin had a house at Penallt, a village just outside the town, in the late 1970s and early 1980s. Playwright George Bernard Shaw was also a regular visitor to the village at the turn of the last century.

Covering an area of 20,000 km2 (8000 square miles), Wales has 3 million inhabitants, 20% of whom can speak Cymraeg (Welsh).

Wales has been a principality of England since the Act of Union in 1536, although the Welsh Assembly sitting in Cardiff is elected by the Welsh people. Wales was in the past known for its coal, tin and lead mines.

The patron saint of Wales is St David and the Welsh flag is composed of a red dragon on a green and white field.

The national emblem is the leek, a relative of the onion. Wales was never conquered by the Roman Empire, due to its mountainous terrain and ample amounts of rain and so it was resistant to the spread of Christianity in the latter stages of Roman occupation. It remained pagan for a longer period that it's English neighbour and so fairly reliable, and well-documented, Welsh pagan mythology survives to this day.

Wales (Welsh: Cymru) is a country in Europe. It is one of the six Celtic countries and it is part of the United Kingdom. Wales is to the west side of England. The capital of Wales is Cardiff (in Welsh: Caerdydd). The National Assembly of Wales meets in Cardiff.

The highest mountains in Wales are in Gwynedd, in the north-west, and include Snowdon (or Yr Wyddfa), which is the highest peak in Wales and England at 1085 m (3,560 ft).

Wales has a population of just under three million people. The majority of the population lives in the South and the East of the country. The main languages spoken in Wales are English and Welsh. Welsh is a Celtic language, related to Cornish and Breton. About one out of every five people in Wales speaks it.
