A review, and essay on how racist has mainstream US media, and to some extent world, been in 1900-2006, and to some extent the whole world. And other politically correct issues.
Let us wonder if the US media is racist.
Most people, i.e the media, and right wingers, and even some left wingers, say
that the US mainstream media is politically correct and liberal, and Democrat.
So
I wondered it is.
So here is my look.
At first glance it is amazing how
left wing the US media, is compared to the US nation. If you look at the US it
is supposed to be in the normal left wing attacks I believe to be 20% white right
wing. And the rest of the nation 20% liberal whites who are fairly left liberal,
bit not entirely and 10% left wing, and 20% very right wing racists, and 30% Jewish
and black people, who have the same percents between them who are not racist,
and who are racist.
Surely the US media, should have had extreme racist
media, by that. You just wonder how could a society which allowed segregation,
and extreme racism, in slavery and massacres of Native Americans, and lynchings,
even some racism, from non-white communities, but far less of course, And on first
glance throughout the whole of US media history there has never been the hard
on full blown racism, that a society that allowed segregation could have expected.
Think of Britain which has a number of racist comedians, the USA does not
seem to have exported anything like that. Britain's media is also called by the
right, pc and all that too. So maybe the US media, Is not as PC as everybody says,
and actually there are loads of racist comedians we do not know about, who are
never exported. Who are in the south. South Africa, is a very important one, here
as White South Africans had the same racist beliefs as White Southerners, And
that land had loads of racist comedy, I heard a show which said what the most
successful white comedies, were, and it was white people doing impressions of
coloured people, (not black people, coloured people), saying things that described
them as stupid. And think of Nazi Germany, they had racists, and look at how virulent
their anti Semitism, was, from history programmes I have seen they descried Jews
as rats, and did that in documentaries and had cartoons whose parables were as
Jews as cannibals, and some animals, and Germans as nice people, and so across
history full on horrific racism, has been in existence but nothing of that nature
has ever appeared out of US media. And not really British media, or German or
European media since WW2, happily as of socialist and liberals, and more anti
racist right wingers.
So lets think what essences of racism, have there ever
been in racism, in the USA., Lets think, well Frasier, Seinfeld, Cheers, friends,
all these never do anything virulently racist, neither does any of the major films,
like just off the top of my head, The Goonies, Back to the future, etc. etc. ,
blah blah blah. And if anything they in the modern era have been anti racist,
with anti racist statements such as Happy Days, sending some characters off to
help Civil rights protests, and MASH saying stuff considered anti racist at the
time, to do with blood, So thats that.
But is that not amazing, for a land,
which if you look on the internet has loads of racists, and the South is filled
with racism. So you just have to then think is there any racism, in US media,
Well yes there may be some elements of it. What about how every single US show
seems to be essentially segregated. As a spin off of segregation. IE all those
comedies I mentioned have virtually no black characters ever. Even the Fresh Prince
of Bel Air, a comedy thats with black characters has more white people, than those
have black.
So that is one thing. Since the 1950s the media has stopped seeing
Native Americans as enemies, more and more, and more seen them as ok. But then
maybe the US media is left wing as on the whole maybe even most racist Americans
want a more liberal society. And if you look at the US in the past, in days of
less equality,
then racism, was more plentiful in the media,
I would like
to think the establishing of a more democratic US, in the late 19thC, in the North,
and 1900s, made this the case, you know since, the left became stronger, and maybe
its like Woodrow Wilson, I read he became anti segregation in the 1910s as of
race rio6ts in the USA, Maybe the whole USA did., As before then the media had
more racist stuff, the idea of Native Americans being blood thirsty enemies was
stronger in the media before the 1910s, and the US having things of characters
like Uncle Tom, and portraying slaves in ways that were unfair, and also the Irish
maybe at times, and also there was that buffalo bill guy attacking Native Americans
to some, And the movie birth of a nation is said to have been racist to some,
Also in the US media, there have been some racist things, but not that many,
lets think Laurel and Hardie was never racist, or Chaplin, the most racist thing
about Laurel and Hardie, was a soot joke, which was minor surely compared to mass
racism, of many politicians of the time, and they were the same attitude to black
people as to whites when even some 1970s white pc comedies seemed a bit different
attitude to other races as to the rest , but maybe as they were not wanting to
seem racist and maybe the north and Britain despite them both being quite segregated,
were not interested on racism, unlike 1960s and 1970s, where we are more interested
in the issue, and more concerned about not wanting to seem racist but they were
in the 1970s campaigning against racism, and better, in many ways, but all the
major characters Chaplin etc were anti racist too or not interested in the issue,,
the only not so was the characters were often entirely white, so thats is my report,
I would like to think for some reason in the late 19thC and early 20thC the World
moved against racism, maybe as of more democracy, and freedom, and socialism,
Maybe Hollywood is to the left of the public, as the public in their heart
of hearts wanted this,m and ethnic minorities were not that small in numbers so
were the deciding vote in a society that was not that segregated,
But the
south was segregated so surely there could have been loads of racist southern
movies, like that southern slave movie of the 1950s
So I feel 1930s FDR
and liberalism, was what stopped racism, being so much in the US media, as linked
with ethnic minorities, Jews, Blacks, and Native Americans, and immigrants were
strong, so anti racism, was encoureaged and more, and this made the Republicans
centrists the people needed by Republicans to take power, also have to be more
anti racist, and favour of Martin Luther King style statements. And also the fact
the rest of the world buys this media, all r5aces, has an influence, so that is
why the US media, is not very racist, though it does have some anti pc, stuff,
segregation, and hero worship where the handsome person is the hero, and the ugly
person not sadly, but that is that, and sometimes recently the Dems pro gay stuff
has seen it been pro gay and pro all persecuted peoples a but, though also not,
the anti pc increase of the late 90s, did not do that much in the US media of
the 1990s, as there were still not that many black people, though more far more
than in the 1960s, and much more than the 1930sm before then that as they came
in in greater numbers, they cancelled out a .surge in 1994 Rep revolution anti
PC Reaganite ways, incredibly the most important things was this then, the popular
media was shuvved left by the McCartyhite era, in disgust at it, unlike most aspects
of US life, it was shuvved left as of Vietnam and the Civil rites era, the 70s,
celebration of civil rites, seems to have pushed the media left and the Reagainte
era, did too, maybe as the workers, and ethnic minorities were being ignored in
many ways by him, so needed to shout in anger more, the 90s, saw less of a shove
left not any new obsessively anti Republican party people as occurred in the 1980s,
though in the 1990s, talk radio came a obsessively anti left wing thing, You wonder
if the type of media, decides the ideals of the media, maybe TV has to be left
wing, but talk radios are more usually right wing but then again there has been
right wing TV like Fox TV so that disproves that theory.,
So you know maybe
if things had been different Hollywood, could have started in Alabama, and been
a far right horrific nazi propaganda service from the 1930s, and too now, but
that seems unlikely,
But to say that it was bound to be nice as people want
nice media to watch can not be true, as it would just have been as likely to be
nasty right wing,
So maybe it was a bizarre thing, or maybe it was USSR communists,
or some kind of social thing as of emancipations of the 20thC, from less feudalism,
worldwide, to independence and democracy, and socialism, being wanted and so the
media to becoming leftist, and maybe state could have stopped that by laws, or
maybe not, and maybe now the state could establish the media as leftist by laws,
So lets hope it moved even more to the left but not in a too boring way,
Britain meanwhile has far more anti gay stuff, with some comedians even today being obsessively having their entire act virtually about homophobia, and when Little Britain;s stars said their gay characters were pro gay not anti gay, and showed their disdain for what I call homophobic scum, their viewing figures dropped massively, as the dumb nazis who were just laughing at gays just wanted to hate gays, homophobia is massively involved in British comedy, and hardly any at all in US comedy, But it seems Britain had more gay people in the media per head, it seems, doesn't it.Look at the carry on movies, and loads of the top most best remembered British comedies. Though Britain does have more black characters, in TV, at times, see only fools and horses, it has 1 main black character, compared to 0 for all the best US comedies that involved a character as the star., even Mork and Mindy, as British society, was not in the 1980s as segragated as the US. even Mork and Mindy, a very liberal comedy, but all the same Only Fools and horses often has allot of Non PC jokes in it, about other races, other than white, while you very very rrarely get that in the US, even old ones. Even Bilko, deffinately. I remember Bilko, had a black character in one episode, and he treatwed him, exactly the same as he would everybody else, even though it was only a decade since the US did not even allow Black People and White people to be in the same battalion or something. Isnt that amazing, that the surely more traditionally racist USA surely more traditionally racist had less racist stuff than Britain, And then the strange fact, but very explainable. even though the number of black people in the US is higher there are far less black people in the average US comedy. Other than ones where the star character is black. THe US has no black people in Cheers, or even Fraser, and even my fave Seinfeld, But these shows Seinfeld, Cheers, and Farser, never indicate racist statements, not even sub under the counter nudhe nudge wink wink stuff. And actually in Seinfeld there was 1 black man, and in Freinds, 1, a girlfriend of Joey. Well I suppose it shows the media is a screen on society, and that despite some attempts at making anti racist stuff, from the writers, and such, stuff happens. What is for certain is teh US media, never really seems racist, and seemed anti racist to some extent since the 1960s,. yes there was stuff which seemed racist before like Gone with the wind and birth of a nation, but since the 1960s I like to think as of more anti racist attitudes across the North, and majority of the US, and as the South is not just a pure monopoly of whites, but has been forced to give black people some power, that is less the case. People say that actors and Hollywood, are normally left wing, but this is a lie, i.e look at John Wayne he did not want blacjk people to be gicven the vote for a while, and look at those Hollywood, Honchos who tried to make a movie man, turn a anti gangster Documentry into a strange Anti Communist one, where the gangsters were said to be Communists. in the 1940s or 50s, look at the reasnobloy hiogh number of Republican party politicians who were once actors. Plus Mel Gibson, Ok it is majority left and more so than the rest of the US but maybe as it needed talent from everywhere so from every race, sexuality, and such, and so even the racists and homophobic scum, had to become accepting of Jews, foriegners, gays, women, blah blah blah. well hopefully that is the case, as it will guarantee a leftist Hollywood, but I may sadly be wrong, and sadly nazis may make Hollywood turn right, Or maybe it needs to be blandly PC, a good thing, so it does not offend more people than it pleases, so make it a worhless piece of crap. So its good at times, lets hope it pushes even more leftist.
