The Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC), commonly called Northern Cyprus (Turkish: Kuzey Kbrs), has been a de facto independent republic located in the north of Cyprus. The TRNC declared its independence in 1983, nine years after a Greek Cypriot coup attempting to annex the island to Greece triggered an invasion by Turkey. It has received diplomatic recognition from Turkey, on which it has been dependent economically, politically and militarily.

Cape Kormatis is a promontory on the north-western coast of the Mediterranean island of Cyprus named after the nearby village with the same name. Lying within the territory it also marks the northernmost extent of Morphou Bay. The nearest coastal town to Cape Kormatis is Kyrenia (Greek: Keryneia, Turkish: Girne).
Elaea or Elaia was the ancient name for a promontory of Cyprus, near the ancient city of Knidos. The cape lies within the territory of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus.
The Karpass Peninsula, also known as Karpasia or Krpas,a is a long, finger like peninsula that is one of the most prominent geographical features of the island of Cyprus. Its farthest extent is Cape Apostolos Andreas, and its major population centre is the town of Rizokarpaso (Turkish: Dipkarpaz).
The Mesaoria is a broad, sweeping plain which makes up the centre of the island of Cyprus.
Morphou Bay is a part of the Mediterranean Sea, located on the North Western side of the island of Cyprus. It is named after the nearby inland town of Morphou. The bay forms the westernmost seaboard of the break-away Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus, which claims the bay as its own territorial waters.
The Mesaoria plain is bounded on the east and west by the Mediterranean Sea, on the south by the Troodos mountains and on the north by the Kyrenia mountains.
