Every year it is host to the East Coast Surfing Championship as well as the North American Sand Soccer Championship that attracts teams from around the world. It is also home to several state parks, several long protected beach areas, three military bases, a number of large corporations, two universities, and historic sites. Near the point where the Chesapeake Bay and the Atlantic Ocean meet, Cape Henry was the site of the first landing
Cape Henry is a cape on the Atlantic shore of Virginia in the independent city of Virginia Beach. It is the southern boundary of the entrance to Chesapeake Bay.
Across the mouth of the bay to the north is Cape Charles. Named for sons of King James I of England in 1607, together Cape Henry and Cape Charles form the Virginia Capes. Cape Henry was named in 1607 in honor of Henry Frederick, Prince of Wales, the eldest son of King James I of England, by an expedition of the London Company branch of the proprietary Virginia Company headed by Captain Christopher Newport. After an unusually long voyage of 144 days from England, it was their first landfall, an event which has come to be called "The First Landing".
The Cape Henry Memorial commemorates The First Landing of the settlers. The Cape Henry Lighthouse has long been important for the large amount of ocean-going shipping traffic for the harbors, its rivers, and shipping headed to ports on the Chesapeake Bay. It was the first lighthouse authorized by the USA government, dating from 1792. It was also the first federal construction project under the Constitution, for an original contract amount of $15,200 (an additional $2,500 was required to finish the lighthouse). See also the "Boston Light" article for more on lighthouse firsts.
Fort Story Military Reservation is a facility of the USA Army located in the independent city of Virginia Beach, Virginia at Cape Henry. It is a sub-installation of the USA Army Transportation Center and Fort Eustis. Fort Story is the prime location and training environment for both Army amphibious operations and Joint Logistics-Over-the-Shore (LOTS) training events. Coastal artillery batteries of two 16 inch coast gun M1919 were installed in the early 20th century to defend the entrance to Chesapeake Bay from attacking naval forces. These weapons were removed shortly after World War II. The large armored gun emplacements and former ammunition bunkers are currently used for storage.
Great Neck Point is a point of land and neighborhood in Virginia Beach, Virginia on the Lynnhaven River. It is home to the Adam Keeling House and the Keeling family cemetery. Before the area was settled by the English colonists, Chesepioc was located at Great Neck Point. It was a village of the Chesepians, the Native American (American Indian) inhabitants of the area during the Woodland Period and later prior to the arrival of the English settlers in 1607. The Algonquian word "Chesepioc" means "Great Shellfish Bay", a reference to the Chesapeake Bay. Archaeologists and other persons have found numerous Native American artifacts, such as arrowheads, stone axes, pottery, beads, and skeletons in Great Neck Point.
