West Yellowstone is a town in Gallatin County, Montana, adjacent to Yellowstone National Park.
Gallatin County is a county located in the U.S. state of Montana. The prominent physical feature of the county is the Gallatin River, named by Meriwether Lewis in 1805 for Albert Gallatin, USA Treasury Secretary from 1801-14. The Big Sky Resort is about midway between West Yellowstone and Bozeman. The Gallatin River canyon is accessed by U.S. Highway 191.

Yellowstone National Park, set aside by the USA Congress as a national park on March 1, 1872, is located mostly in the USA state of Wyoming, though it also extends into Montana and Idaho. The park was the first of its kind, and is known for its wildlife and its many geothermal features, especially Old Faithful Geyser, one of the most popular areas in the park. It has many types of ecosystems, but the Boreal forest is dominant. The Continental Divide of North America runs diagonally through the southwestern part of the park. The divide is a topographic feature that separates Pacific Ocean and Atlantic Ocean water drainages. About one third of the park lies on the west side of the divide. The origins of the Yellowstone and Snake Rivers are near each other but on opposite sides of the divide. As a result, the waters of the Snake River flow to the Pacific Ocean, while those of the Yellowstone find their way to the Atlantic Ocean via the Gulf of Mexico.

The Snake River Plain is a geologic feature located primarily in the American state of Idaho. It stretches about 400 miles (640 km) westward from northwest of the state of Wyoming to the Idaho-Oregon border. The plain is a wide flat bow-shaped depression, and covers about a quarter of Idaho. Three major buttes dot the plain east of Arco, the largest being Big Southern Butte.

Yellowstone Caldera is the volcanic caldera in Yellowstone National Park in the
United States. It is located in the northwest corner of Wyoming extending into
portions of Montana and Idaho.
