Windermere is a town and civil parish in Cumbria, England. It lies about
half a mile away from lake Windermere. Although the town Windermere does not touch
the lake, it has now grown together with the older lakeside town of Bowness-on-Windermere,
though the two retain distinguishable town centres. There are a number of museums,
but the main attraction for the tourists is the lake itself that touches Bowness
at the bottom of the hill (about a twenty minute walk from the top of Windermere
town). Here there is a beautiful view of the mountains. Boats from the piers in
Bowness sail around the lake, many calling at Ambleside or at Lakeside where there
is a restored railway.
Historically a part of Westmorland, Windermere town was known as Birthwaite prior to the arrival of the Kendal and Windermere Railway, which stimulated its development. Windermere station offers train and bus connections to the surrounding area, Manchester, Manchester Airport, and the West Coast Main Line.
Bowness-on-Windermere is built on hilly terrain on the shores of Windermere in South Lakeland, Cumbria, England; while it has now grown together with the town of Windermere (which, confusingly, does not actually touch the lake), the two still have distinguishable town centres.
Windermere railway station offers train and bus connections to the surrounding areas, Manchester, Manchester Airport, and the West Coast Main Line, and is about a fifteen-minute walk from the lakefront. Both Stagecoach and the local council provide frequent connecting buses from Bowness Pier; Stagecoach's open-top double-decker buses travel through the centre of town and continue to Ambleside and Grasmere, while the council's wheelchair-accessible minibuses run around the edge of town. The Windermere Ferry, a car carrying cable ferry, connects Bowness with Far Sawrey on the opposite side of the lake.
The town's ancient parish church of St Martin was built in 1483, but of an older foundation. The former rectory is said to have been built in 1415.
Windermere is the largest natural lake in England. It has been one of the countrys most popular places for holidays and summer homes since 1847, when the Kendal and Windermere Railway built a branch line to it. It is in the county of Cumbria and entirely within the Lake District National Park.
